Three European nations – Italy, Slovenia, and Poland – have successfully advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball Nations League, emerging victorious from their quarter-final matches.
Defending champions France were the sole European team eliminated, falling 1:3 to Slovenia and thus unable to retain their title from the previous edition.
Slovenia`s qualification marks their third semi-final appearance in five years, following fourth-place finishes in 2021 and 2024. This time, after an outstanding quarter-final performance against France, the European powerhouse is poised for a medal.
Tonček Štern`s impressive 17 points propelled Slovenia to a 3:1 victory. They took the first set 25:22, but a determined France responded by winning the second 15:25. Slovenia, however, regained momentum, dominating the final two sets 25:19 and 25:18 to seal their semi-final spot.
Poland delivered the most decisive quarter-final win, overcoming their recent preliminary round slump to sweep Japan 3:0. After hard-fought first two sets (25:23, 26:24), Poland dominated the third, closing it out decisively 25:12.
Kewin Sasak continued his superb form for Poland, contributing 15 points, with Tomasz Fornal adding 11 points in a strong collective effort.
This marks Poland`s sixth consecutive semi-final appearance in the VNL, a streak during which they have consistently medaled: gold in 2023, silver in 2021, and bronze in 2019, 2022, and 2024.
Poland is set to face Brazil, who currently boast the best record in the 2025 VNL with 12 wins and only one loss. The other semi-final will be an all-European clash between Slovenia and Italy.
Italy, aiming for their first VNL title and holding the second-best preliminary round record, showcased dominance against Cuba in the quarter-finals. Alessandro Michieletto and Kamil Rychlicki were particularly outstanding, combining for 33 points.
Italy secured the first two sets 25:18 and 25:19, conceded the third 20:25, but rallied powerfully in the fourth to win 25:21, advancing to their third VNL semi-final in history.
Both semi-finals – Slovenia vs. Italy, and Brazil vs. Poland – are scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd. The medal matches will follow on August 3rd, all held in Ningbo, China.
