Trae Young and Patrick Beverley Clash Over All-Star Effort and Leadership

NBA noticias

Despite not having played in an NBA game since May 2024, Patrick Beverley continues to generate discussion. The veteran guard recently engaged in a public exchange with Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, debating topics from All-Star game intensity to leadership qualities.

The Initial Spark

The controversy began when Beverley responded to a question on social media platform X, questioning why players exert maximum effort in summer pick-up games but appear less intense during the All-Star game. Beverley commented, “Because All-Stars take the game for granted. Not 1 All-Star on the court. good bump.”

This prompted a swift reply from Trae Young, a four-time All-Star himself, who advised Beverley to “relax” and allow players to speak for their own experiences.

Beverley`s Counterattack

Four days later, Beverley escalated the feud on his podcast, stating that Young “hasn`t won enough to even speak to me like that or tweet me like that.” He highlighted his own playoff experience:

“He`s been to the playoffs three times. I`ve been to the playoffs nine [times]. He`s been in the NBA seven years. My first seven years I didn`t miss the playoffs at all in the Western Conference.” Beverley acknowledged that he wasn`t always the primary player but emphasized the importance of team effort.

Beverley further claimed to have spoken with former Hawks players who reportedly expressed a reluctance to play in Atlanta, suggesting dissatisfaction with Young`s leadership. “They don`t think he`s a good leader. They don`t think he`s a good teammate,” Beverley asserted, adding, “Trae, you could score all the points you want. … If you don`t win, that won`t matter. … they`re going to forget your name. Fast, too.”

Young`s Rebuttal

Young quickly responded with a nearly 12-minute video on X. The Hawks guard challenged Beverley`s claims, stating Beverley “doesn`t know what it`s like” to be in his position. He directly addressed the accusation that former teammates called the team “Trae`s Hawks,” demanding, “State your source. Which teammate of mine told [you] that it`s the Trae Hawks, it ain`t the Atlanta Hawks?”

Young also drew comparisons regarding their playoff celebrations, humorously referencing Beverley`s enthusiastic reaction to winning a play-in game with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2022. “We not even gonna talk about how we celebrate play-in wins,” Young quipped. “You win play-in games at home, and you standing on the scorer`s table acting like it`s a championship. We celebrate wins different, too.”

Young concluded his video with a message of “nothing but love” for Beverley, suggesting they could connect through former teammates if Beverley wished to discuss things privately, or continue the public debate if he preferred.

The segment ended with a snippet of Drake`s song “Tuscan Leather,” where the rapper says, “Bench players talkin` like starters, I hate it,” a line Young seemed to allude to.

The Back-and-Forth Continues

The Atlanta Hawks organization joined the fray by posting a video compilation of Young scoring against Beverley in past matchups.

Beverley then released another YouTube video, labeling Young`s statistics as “empty stats” that don`t always translate to wins, and criticized Young`s defensive performance. He urged Young to “Humble yourself. Embrace the constructive criticism. Get better at that and move on.”

Doubling down on his claims about Atlanta, Beverley pointed to the frequent turnover in the Hawks` coaching and front office staff during Young`s tenure, implying a connection. “Everyone that comes sees Trae Young, they get thrown out the building by their collar,” Beverley stated, adding, “People are scared to play in Atlanta.”

Beverley also questioned Young`s commitment, claiming he never sees Young training at the team facility, unlike other star teammates Beverley has played with. “Every time we see you, you`re working out at another place. We never see you in the Hawks arena working out,” he said.

A Hope for Motivation

Despite the sharp criticism, Beverley expressed a desire for the exchange to be productive. “Regardless how it goes, it`s going to be good that comes out of this,” Beverley stated. “I hope this is motivating. I hope that you get to the end of the year and you fighting for a playoff. I hope that this is so motivating that this take you to the Eastern Conference [finals].”
